How to Sell Out (or Buy In)

\"\"id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5356233283173618130\" Last week Zak Penn voiced his concerns about his upcoming Avengers film and Megan Fox had unflattering things to say about Transformers 2. What responsibility do the people who work on the film, particularly the writers, actors and directors, have to its promotion? Does their job end when the cameras stop rolling or should they feel compelled to sell the final product?

  1. I don't think it bodes well for contributors (Actors, Writers, Producers, whomever) to talk their projects down. It either makes them appear as if they only did it for the check (which is often entirely the case but leaves a bad taste in our mouths) or it simply lets us know they're not a team player. At the end of the day, filmmaking is such a collaborative endeavor that success or failure can be attributed to one (or all) of several cogs in the wheel–no sens in pointing fingers either.

Players with back-end compensation have a vested interest in promoting the work–or they're really just don't "get it."

  2. I would be upset if I had an actor talking down about my films because I will feel used. When I hire and actor/crew member, I offer the position and give them the option to do it by reading the material first. I rather have someone look it over then say yes, than to have someone say yes and say its a piece of crap behind my back. Luckly enough I never went through that experience. But these actors should keep their mouth shut.
